Kilteevan A Poster Free Zone

In the interest of our environment, Kilteevan is registered as a Poster Free Zone for elections.

Kilteevan Tidy Towns welcome, acknowledge and respect the fact that Denis Naughton, Orla Leyden and Julie O' Donoghue are running Poster Free Campaigns.

All parties and candidates please note the reality is that;

Like other single use plastics, posters they take 400+ years to biodegrade.

In the 2014 local elections, an estimated 611,000 posters were erected with a combined cost of €3M with posters covering the equivalent area of 23 Croke Parks

This produced 366 tonnes of Co2, the equivalent of driving an average car non-stop for 592 days

After 30 days of canvassing, the majority of these posters were sent to landfill.(Poster Free.ie)

Kilteevan NS Newsletter Term 1 2019-2020

August/September:  We arrived back to school on Thursday 29th August.  We welcomed 4 new students, Heather and Adam in Junior Infants, Yuri in Senior Infants and Kevin in 4th Class.

On Friday September 20th Sixth Class and Mrs. Brennan took part in the Global Climate Action march in Roscommon.

That afternoon, we harvested a bumper crop of apples and cherry tomatoes from our school garden as well as some white onions, red onions, carrots and potatoes.

The following week, the Senior Room went to see “Grease” the Musical by Roscommon Community College in the Arts Centre along with our teachers Mrs. Lynch and Ms. O’Connor. It was great to see past-pupils of Kilteevan NS performing so well in the show!

On Friday 27th Fred the Party Professor arrived at our school, full of tricks and magic. He played eight different musical instruments and entertained us with his jokes! Later that afternoon, we said goodbye to Mrs Lynch – we are looking forward to hearing her good news in a few months!

October: We welcomed Mr Higgins to Kilteevan NS. On Thursday 17th we wore yellow clothes and donated €108 to the Irish Cancer Society through our friend Debbie Porter’s Shave & Dye campaign. Debbie came back to visit us the following week and we were very proud to have our photo taken with her!

We had two winners in the Credit Union Art Competition with the theme “Walk of Life”.  Daniel O’Connor won 1st place in the 7 years and under category and Liam Connolly won 1st place in the age 8-10 category.

On Friday 25th October we all dressed up for Halloween.  It was a really scary day!

November: We collected 30 shoeboxes to go to countries of war for Christmas. Well done everybody! Sixth Class participated in Sci-Fest in Roscommon CBS with their experiment ‘Elephant Toothpaste’. To our absolute delight, they came 2nd Overall with their fun experiment.

An exchange student called Natalia from Spain visited us for a day and told us all about life as a teenager in the Canary Islands. She likes Ireland but isn’t a fan of the weather!

This month, we started Creative Mindfulness lessons with Noelle as part of SPHE. We made lovely Mind Jars to bring home. Maria, Meabh, James and Sean Fox represented our school in the Library Quiz. They came fourth place with 41 points. Well done all! At the end of the month, the whole school went on a Nature Walk to Kilteevan Graveyard. We did a Nature Hunt and visited the graveyard. We prayed for everyone who has died as November is the month of All Souls. In November, we remember…

On Friday November 29th the Senior Room had a Seó Faisean. Everyone dressed up for the Catwalk. It was great fun! There was a builder, carpenter, Billy from Stranger Things, Monica Green, James Bond, soccer players, a GAA manager, a cowboy and lots more!

December: On Monday December 9th, the Senior Room attended mass in Kilteevan Church for the feast day of the Immaculate Conception. Both classrooms visited the lovely crib and talked about the Advent Wreath. We were told the wonderful news that Mrs. Lynch has welcomed a beautiful baby boy, just in time for Christmas! On Friday 13th we wore our Christmas Jumpers and raised €70 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Our Mindfulness lessons are coming to an end on Thursday 19th December. We really enjoyed them!

The pupils and staff of Kilteevan National School wish our families, neighbours and friends a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year!

Thank you from Kilteevan Tidy Towns

Thank you to everyone who supported our very successful Celebration Coffee Morning.

Kilteevan Community Centre was packed to capacity. We were delighted to meet new community members and first time visitors to Kilteevan.

We circulated our Cloonlarge Loop Biodiversity Calendar which was funded by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht under the Peatlands Community Engagement Scheme 2019. It was warmly received.

The traditional Kilteevan home baking went down a treat. Our sustainable Green and Free table proved very popular as was our free raffle of pre- loved items for children.

Recycled, upcycled, dried local leaves and flora and even items a little cracked and broken were used today. In the interest of our environment, we are rethinking everything!

The raffle prize table was very impressive.

We would like to express a very sincere thank you to the following for provided raffle prizes; Caseys Londis, Keenprint, Topline Wards, Dunnes Stores, Roscommon Signs, Conor Dolan Construction, Molloy’s Bakery, Supervalue Roscommon, Ardcarne Garden Centre, St Joseph’s GAA Club, Ned Gilligan,Ray Clabby, John and Caitriona Dolan, Barney and Imelda Donlon and Kathleen Shanagher .

Our heartfelt thanks also for the generous financial donations we received. Your generosity will help to sustain Kilteevan Tidy Towns into the future.
