Kilteevan Registered as Poster Free for 2019 Elections

In keeping with our interest in our environment, Kilteevan Tidy Towns is appealing for poster free 2019 elections. This follows up on our campaign during the Presidential Election and on the Straws Suck Campaign. We are appealing to the goodwill of all candidates in requesting a voluntary poster ban.

The very sad reality is that;

  • Like other single use plastics, posters they take 400+ years to biodegrade.
  • In the 2014 local elections, an estimated 611,000 posters were erected with a combined cost of €3M with posters covering the equivalent area of 23 Croke Parks
  • This produced 366 tonnes of Co2, the equivalent of driving an average car non-stop for 592 days
  • After 30 days of canvassing, the majority of these posters were sent to landfill.(Poster Free.ie)

We welcome the fact that the following candidates are poster free in Roscommon:

Dominick Connolly, Kathleen Shanagher, Valerie Byrne, Orla Leyden, Ivan Connaughton, John Cummins, Joe Murphy, Aidan Sampey and Donal Kilduff.

1,000 People in Roscommon Say No to the Plastic Straw

Thanks to the work of 7 young members of Kilteevan Tidy Towns, one thousand people in Roscommon have signed a pledge not to use plastic straws.

The organisation believes that by working together, the community can be part of a solution, to some of our environmental problems.

Kilteevan Tidy Towns, Roscommon Co Council and Plastic Free Roscommon. worked together on this project to begin the process to rid  Roscommon from single-use unnecessary plastic items.

The project drew to a close at a Tidy Towns meeting in Kilteevan Community Centre on March 5th when Sophie Coen and Éabha Dolan proudly handed over the signatures to Marguerite Croghan (Secretary) and Hugh Brennnan (Treasurer).

Major credit is due to all members of the team;

James Mooney, Kevin Fannon, Kieran Coyle, Sophie Coen, Éabha Dolan, Adam Lalwani, and Liam Egan.

We look forward to their next project which is already hatching in Kilteevan!!
