On January 9th John Mooney, an esteemed and respected community member died.  An air of sadness hung over Kilteevan last weekend as word spread around the community that “Our Man The Century” had quietly slipped away, just ten weeks from celebrating his 100th birthday.

John, beloved husband of the late Kathleen was a quiet spoken man, a true gentleman and a family man.  He was a very sociable person who enjoyed company and always had a hearty welcome for everyone. He was most generous with his time as many of us drew upon his wisdom and knowledge. John’s willingness to share his memories with us has left a legacy for future generations.

John was an active community member and participated in community activities.  He enjoyed coming to events in the restored Community Centre in recent years. He was particularly proud that the Community Centre had become a focal point for community activities.

In the late 1960’s John made a significant contribution to Irish history and archaeology.  When cutting turf in Doogarymore Bog, he unearthed two significant treasures. The first was a Sunflower Pin or Brooch dated as late Bronze Age.  The second find was a wooden, block, chariot wheel which was dated c 450 b.c. The wheel was hugely significant as it provided the earliest direct evidence for wheeled transport in Ireland. Both are on display in the National Museum. Many students have written about the Doogarymore Wheel and there are many references to it in archaeological and historical thesis, articles and journals.

In February 2011, as our most senior citizen, John made a presentation, on behalf of the Kilteevan community to President Mary Mc Aleese at the official opening of Kilteevan Community Centre.

Last August at Kilteevan Gathering, John was thrilled to renew an old friendship with 93 year old Owen Brennan who had emigrated to The United States in 1948.

John Mooney had actually worked with Owen Brennan’s father and was able to direct Owen to a bridge his father had helped construct in the community in the 1930’s.

In November 2013, John delighted the audience with his interview with Sr Kathleen Glennon at the launch of her book  A Sense of Place: Reflections on the Boglands of Kilteevan.

John Mooney has left a lasting legacy to the Kilteevan community.

His memory will be long cherished by those us who were privileged to know him.

Our deepest sympathy to his daughter Mary, sons Malachy and Sean, daughters-in-law Ann and Eleanor, son-in-law Michael, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.
