Blackthorn –Draighean in Irish
Did you know that the Blackthorn is unusual in that the flowers appear before the leaves?
The very pretty white flowers have 5 petals which occur in large numbers. They are one of the first sources of nectar and pollen for insects that emerge early in spring.
The fruit, known as sloes, are bitter blue-black berries which resemble tiny plums
The wood is dense and hard-wearing. It was traditionally used for making the famous blackthorn walking sticks,

Just for the record and in response to your many queries - YES- the Cuckoo is back. The call was heard on the Cloonlarge Loop on Easter Monday April 18th 2022, one day earlier than our first record last year.
As stated in our Biodiversity calendar, this is now a major nature event among walkers and cyclists on the Loop. We met walkers last year who travelled miles with young children just to give them the experience of this wondrous call. Thanks to artist Leonora Neary for her amazing artwork.

The beautiful art work by Junior Tidy Towns, on Lilliput Way celebrates the iconic Curlew today April 21st.
It is such a distinctive bird with its long bill, long legs and haunting call. The Curlew is very much part of our rich culture and heritage. Sadly, it is one of Ireland’s most threatened birds due to the loss of habitat. We are aware we have Curlew in our area. We should be proud of our diverse wildlife and do everything we can to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.
Easter Sunday 2022, Kilteevan Tidy Towns completed our celebration of Ireland’s Decade of Centenaries by installing a black granite plaque of the Irish Proclamation in Gairdín Grace, our Garden of Remembrance and Reflection, in the grounds of the Community Centre.
2022 is a very important year in the decade of Centenaries as it marks 100 years since the foundation of the State.
In 2021, we unveiled a commemoration plaque and planted seven white rose trees in memory of the seven signatories of the Irish Proclamation; Thomas J Clarke, Seán Mac Diarmada, Thomas MacDonagh, P. H. Pearse, Éamonn Ceannt, James Connolly and Joseph Plunkett. The Cherry Blossom tree represents the women who participated in the struggle for Ireland’s independence.
This Kilteevan Tidy Towns initiative is to ensure an enduring physical legacy in our community of Ireland’s struggle for independence.
At this time, we remember the people in Ukraine in their struggle for independence and we pray for peace.
National Tree Week Starts Today
You can play your part in helping to combat climate change during National Tree Week 2022.
Planting trees is the most efficient way of removing carbon from the atmosphere and combatting climate change.
Over the past five years Kilteevan Tidy Towns has planted many trees in the community. This year we look forward to seeing our ten Red Hawthorn trees in bloom. Birds and Pollinators will enjoy them too.
The weather is fine. Why not plant a tree this week and help planet earth?
