Mark Feely continues the Extraordinary Story of Man & Statue

Padraic Ó Conaire was probably the best known Irish language writer of the 20th century.

Ó Conaire wrote in simple, direct Irish about the reality of life Ireland during his time.

Many will remember studying M'Asal Beag Dubh in secondary school.

Padraic died in 1928 aged just 46 years.

In 1929. Albert Power R.H.A. was commissioned to sculpt a statue of Pádraic Ó Conaire. In 1935 the statue of Padraic Ó Conaire was unveiled in Eyre Square by President Eamon de Valera. A crowd of about 3,000 people attended.

Sadly, over time the statue suffered many acts of vandalism. It was repaired and transported to Galway City Museum where it was conserved and protected.

In November 2017, President Michael D Higgins unveiled a bronze replica of a statue of Pádraic Ó Conaire in Galway's Eyre Square, 11 years after the original sculpture was removed for preservation. Work on the bronze statue was overseen by sculptor Maurice Quillinan.

In 2020, Mark Feely was privately commissioned to craft a limestone replica of Padraic Ó Conaire. What an extraordinary masterpiece he has created!  Pure Genius!  And from Lecarrow Limestone!

Kilteevan Tidy Towns was privileged to view, receive permission to photograph and to post the local masterpiece of Padraic here, before he left Roscommon for his new home.

Mark Feely has added a new Roscommon Chapter to this amazing story of Man and Statue.  Well Done Mark! We are so proud of the fact that Roscommon has a sculpture of this calibre.

***Please note the magic of the Mark’s chisel continues. Thanks to Creative Ireland and Roscommon Co Council, Kilteevan Tidy Towns has commissioned an exciting, unique sculpture for Lilliput Way on the Cloonlarge Loop.

Watch this space towards the end of September. You won’t believe what your eyes! Magic Happens!

You can read the extraordinary story of Padraic Ó Conaire at Galway City Museum Website.

Our Friendship Rocks by Kilteevan N.S.

Following yesterday's posting the pupils of Kilteevan N S shared the statement below and their beautiful video to highlight the message they wish to communicate in their work

.

We, the pupils of Kilteevan National School, have made many sacrifices over the past year, to keep ourselves and our families safe from Covid-19. Throughout many 'Lockdowns' and school closures, we missed our extended families, including our grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. We missed our favourite hobbies - Gaa, soccer and skating. Most of all, we missed our friends.

Entry for the Cathaoirleach's Awards 2021 is placed on the Cloonlarge Loop

rock-art-2

As part of the Creative Ireland Programme 2021, Roscommon County Council invited schools and students at all levels of primary and post-primary schools across the county to enter the Cathaoirleach’s Awards Competition.

The Cathaoirleach’s Creative Citizenship Award aims to highlight the diversity of arts, culture and heritage in County Roscommon. This year’s competition responds to the visual arts curriculum in the form of a Local Heroes Rock Art Project,

Students were invited to create art pieces responding to the theme ‘Local Heroes’ using small rocks or stones to be part of their School’s Rock Art Trail.

Students were asked to work together to form the School’s Rock Art Trail – and were encouraged to  place it in their community – on the routes used by people locally for their 5k walks, so that many people could enjoy the creativity and brightness in the local spot. That’s exactly what Kilteevan National School did. They prepared their Rock Art Trail and much to our delight they placed it, in a prominent position under a Hawthorn Tree on the Cloonlarge Loop. Its well worth a visit.

The Local Heroes Rock Art Trails will be fully created in time for Cruinniú na nÓg, Ireland’s national day of creative activity for children and young people – and entire families, which will take place on Saturday 12th June.

The Awards will be announced/presented by Cathaoirleach Cllr. Laurence Fallon on Friday 11th June. Listings of all of the Rock Art Trails will feature in Roscommon County Council’s Cruinniú na nÓg programme so that they can be enjoyed by all (adhering to Covid restrictions).
