FarmPEAT Project Presentation

As part of the Science curriculum, all pupils of Kilteevan NS learn about plants and animals and learn about environmental awareness and care i.e. caring for the local natural environment.

Earlier this year, as part of our pupils' work in Science, Geography and Visual Arts, all pupils participated in the Farm PEAT Project competition "Love Your Wellies".

Over 1,000 schools entered the competition and Kilteevan NS had not one, but two entries shortlisted in the Top 10 - The Turf Hopper by Killian Lunt and The Peatlands by Mark Fox. The school learned today that we had 8 entries shortlisted in the Top 40 - amazing!

In June 2022, the Overall Winner of the Love Your Wellies competition was announced...... Mark Fox Jnr from Kilteevan NS!

Today, four members of The FarmPeat Project visited Kilteevan National School to present  winning pupil Mark with his prize.

Members of the Kilteevan Tidy Towns Committee, chairperson of the of the Board of Management Mr. Tom Costello, pupils and staff gathered in our school yard this afternoon for a lovely prize giving ceremony.

Eileen Fahey from Kilteevan Tidy Towns spoke passionately about her love for the bog and commended the pupils and staff of Kilteevan NS for all of their work helping to preserve and protect the local environment.

Mark presented his project, explaining that he was inspired by his Mam, her work with Kilteevan Tidy Towns and his late Grandad Cahill. He showed  samples of sphagnum moss, grass and peat used in his 3-D model, explained the importance of the bog in terms of soaking up water and storing carbon and reminded us that "a drying bog is a dying bog!"

2.

How lucky we are to have the bogs of Cloonlarge and Clooncraff so close to  Kilteevan NS

Keep your eyes peeled for interviews and photographs from today's presentation in the local newspapers, hopefully very soon!

Sincere congratulations to Mark - your love of your family, your love of the local environment and your artistic talents really shone through in your project.
