Celebrate World Wetlands Day on the Cloonlarge Loop in Kilteevan
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on the 2nd of February to raise global awareness of the value of wetlands for humanity and the planet. It marks the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. This year the day celebrates the important role played by wetlands, as natural solutions, in adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change.
To mark this year’s World Wetlands Day a nature walk has been organised on part of the Cloonlarge Loop in Kilteevan. The Cloonlarge Loop is a 5km long loop walk (with a 7km option). It has a small carpark, a trail map, way markers, a tree trail, bog views, a picnic bench, resting points, information panels and a locally-made Turf Hopper. It also boasts quirky creative wood craft. Cloonlarge Bog itself is a wonderful example of a raised bog and is a unique habitat for a range of important bogland species.
For World Wetlands Day, on Saturday the 2nd of February, the starting point & car park for the walk is Kilteevan Community Centre at 10:45am where buses will bring participants to the trail head. We will walk a small section of the loop to allow lots of time for looking at nature. It should be an interesting morning with some very knowledgeable bog experts lined up. The event is free and all are welcome, kids must be supervised by an adult. We should all be back at Kilteevan Community centre by lunch time.
This event is being hosted by Kilteevan Tidy Towns, in conjunction with The National Parks and Wildlife Service and The Waters and Communities Office and is supported by the Heritage Office of Roscommon County Council as an action of the County Roscommon Heritage Plan. If you have any queries, please contact the Roscommon County Council Heritage Office on 090 6637106.
Please dress appropriately and bring binoculars if you have some.
