Heritage Council Grant 2017

Kilteevan Graveyard Committee applied in March this year under the Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2017 for funding for emergency conservation works to Kilteevan medieval parish church and adjoining burial vault. Subject to their terms and conditions thheritage-webe Heritage Council has offered the sum of €5,000 towards this project. Roscommon County Council is also supporting the conservation works.

The Heritage Council received 429 applications this year and awarded funding to 196 heritage projects. Kilteevan was one of six successful projects in the county.

Permission to carry out the works has been obtained from the National Monuments Service. Once a stonemason has been approved by Blackwood Associates, Conservation Architects for the project, permission will then be requested from Roscommon County Council. This year the works will concentrate on the conservation of the north wall of the church ruin which is the most vulnerable and in imminent danger of collapse.

All projects offered funding agree to hold an event during Heritage Week. Our event, ‘Kilteevan Graveyard Miscellany’, will include:

• the exploration of the church ruin and conservation proposals

• an appraisal of the memorials: their funerary art from religious to occupational symbols with some biographical details

• our ‘Managed for Wildlife’ area will also be viewed.

This event takes place on Saturday 19 August at 12.30 p.m. at Kilteevan Graveyard. Everyone is invited to attend. If you are free, please come along!
